I have this idea that the more I let her be naked now, the more accepting of her body she will be later. I don't know that any studies would back me up. At this point, it's just a hunch. And it's a hope, grown out of a decade spent working with teenage girls who hate their bodies, that somehow my kid will be an exception.

George Sossi, director of city marketing and business development said Ballarat in the Raw was designed to give the gallery's forthcoming exhibition The Naked and the Nude, a local flavour.

"We are looking to celebrate the community of Ballarat as we are, it's a little bit cheeky, and it's a bit of fun,'' Mr Sossi said.

"The Eureka Flag itself is synonymous with the City of Ballarat, and it doesn't belong to one particular group. It's a flag of the people, it's everybody's and it's a flag of protest, so it fits very nicely with what we're seeking to do.''

Mr Sossi said already more than 30 people had volunteered to be photographed, including a 77-year-old woman.

"We've had lots of different people, from across the community, and from all walks of life, wanting to be part of it.''

“How are other residents on the lake gonna feel about this?” asked Hugh Coward, board vice-chairman. “That can open a big can of worms there.”

He said: "I love the sun, I love being naked, I am proud of my body and I like getting to meet other naked people. This is the only place in London you can legally sunbathe naked. This is a very British problem - why are we so prudish in this country? In Germany every park has an area for naked people. It is a human right - everyone in the country should have somewhere to sunbathe naked."

These brothers let their children, ages 8, 6 and 4, go swimming naked. Then one of the wives took off her bikini top to nurse her baby. My daughter was completely shocked and could not sleep that night because she had been so embarrassed in front of her friends.

We can only imagine your daughter’s mortification to have her friends see the relatives au natural. They showed poor judgment and lack of consideration for others. And, at a public lake, they could have been arrested for indecent exposure.

Dear Angry, my advice is to calm down. First of all, the laws protect nursing mothers, so this woman did nothing wrong. No woman should be ashamed to feed her child. I suggest that you do a Google search for breastfeeding and take this opportunity to talk to your daughter and explain to her that what this woman did was perfectly natural and healthy, and extremely beneficial to her baby.

As for the skinny-dipping children, as long as the behavior was not lewd, there is nothing wrong with childhood innocence. It's a good thing that these families are raising their children not to be ashamed of their bodies. Once they hit puberty, it's likely that they will become more self-conscious and begin to wear swimsuits anyway. Let them have this youthful freedom while it lasts. Instead of being angry, you should talk to these brothers about nudism and listen to their side of the story. Whenever their is a cultural clash, dialogue leads to understanding, but anger only leads to resentment.

I’d always been overly shy about my body.

Being an only girl and having a heart condition that precluded me from taking gym class and, therefore, having to disrobe in front of others, even wearing a swimsuit was torture. You can see that in old pictures of me: I’m curled into myself, as if to prevent a good look at my body.

So for my landmark 50th birthday, I had to do something big.

Something I never would have imagined myself doing. I asked local artist Pat Callahan to sketch me. In the nude. The sketches are beautiful — soft strokes of pastels on textured paper.

It still unnerves me to remember posing for the portrait, but the important thing is that I did.

Przybyszewski doesn't think dressing up means dressing slutty, which she says too many women do today. She attributes that trend to the "red carpet'' effect, where movie stars before the Oscars try to attract photographers' attention by wearing strapless, revealing gowns that are inappropriate for most occasions ("I was rather appalled to see an off-the-shoulder communion dress in a suburban Chicago church this summer'').

As for guys, "most of my students are wearing T-shirts and shorts or T-shirts and jeans," she says. "In colleges in the 1950s, young men wore ties and sport coats.''

And should they really wear flip-flops? "Men's bare toes, I don't find very attractive. I don't know why I should have to look at them,'' she says.

“I’m no nudist,” Gilligan confesses. “I think that with most people it’s good that they wear clothing, and some people should probably wear more – if only for aesthetic reasons. I’m not being judgemental about clothing. At the physiological level, wearing clothes routinely from birth will have profound sensory consequences. Our skin is what fundamentally connects us to the physical world and makes us aware of our bodily existence, and clothing disrupts those connections. Looking at a lot of trends in basic human behaviour, we have become increasingly distanced from our natural surroundings. Instead we become more attached to the material substitutes we create and this began, in my view, when our ancestors became accustomed to being fully clothed. Yet the strange thing is that virtually all of this is now almost totally unconnected to our clothing.”

I found myself wondering why I looked so keenly at her mostly naked body. Why did I look so hard at biker man in his mostly naked body?

Some years ago, at a family nude beach on the northern coast of Germany, everyone was naked, old and young and in-between. After a few initial moments of puritanical American panic, I shed my clothes and fit right in. What would have been odd there was if someone walked by in a suit and tie and hat! No one paid any attention whatsoever. It was just what it was.
