09/04/2008 In Defense of a Naked Toddler Ellen Friedrichs has a wonderful essay on the trials and tribulations of letting her toddler be naked in parks, playgrounds and swimming areas. I have this idea that the more I let her be naked now, the more accepting of her body she will be later. I don't know that any studies would back me up. At this point, it's just a hunch. And it's a hope, grown out of a decade spent working with teenage girls who hate their bodies, that somehow my kid will be an exception.Ellen gets scolded by other parents and park personnel, and is even approached by a cop who advises her to clothe her child because of potential perverts. Ellen, rightly so, worries more about a potential pooping incident than the threat of a child molester. Clothing is unnatural, and children sense this, shedding their coverings whenever they are wet, or too hot. Adults who enter a nudist lifestyle have to overcome the stigma brought about from all the years of being told that the body is something to be ashamed of. Once the shame aspect is removed, suddenly clothing becomes heavy and uncomfortable, and the impulse to remove it all becomes very strong. After swimming, sunbathing, hiking or doing just about anything outdoors in the nude, it's very difficult to imagine going back to textile mode. For children, nudity is a natural instinct, unencumbered by adult modesty and shame. Kudos to Ellen for allowing her child to hold onto the innocence as long as possible. 09/04/2008 California to Appeal San Onofre Ruling From The Los Angeles Times: The notice of appeal "illustrates the lengths to which the parks department will go in order to avoid the inconvenience of having to listen to the public that they're supposed to be serving," said R. Allen Baylis, the Huntington Beach attorney and naturist activist named in the original lawsuit -- and a regular fixture at Trail 6. "They're going to have to really do some fantastic legal work in order to get this ruling overturned."Tags: nudism, naturism, nudist, nudists, naturist, naturists, nudity, nudes, bare, au naturel, nude, naked |

09/04/2008 Nudist Resort Threatened Turtle Lake Nudist Resort in Michigan faces a potential conflict from a proposed county park on the same lake. The nudists would be visible from a boat on the lake. “How are other residents on the lake gonna feel about this?” asked Hugh Coward, board vice-chairman. “That can open a big can of worms there.”Tags: nudism, naturism, nudist, nudists, naturist, naturists, nudity, nudes, bare, au naturel, nude, naked |

09/03/2008 Man Tries to Increase the Size... ...of a nudist sunbathing area in Hampstead Heath. He said: "I love the sun, I love being naked, I am proud of my body and I like getting to meet other naked people. This is the only place in London you can legally sunbathe naked. This is a very British problem - why are we so prudish in this country? In Germany every park has an area for naked people. It is a human right - everyone in the country should have somewhere to sunbathe naked."Tags: nudism, naturism, nudist, nudists, naturist, naturists, nudity, nudes, bare, au naturel, nude, naked |

09/03/2008 Wrong, and Wrong Again Even with all the information about the benefits of breastfeeding, and the fact that laws protect women from indecent exposure when nursing their children in public, some people still don't get it. A woman writes to Dear Annie about the behavior of her nudist relatives at a family event: These brothers let their children, ages 8, 6 and 4, go swimming naked. Then one of the wives took off her bikini top to nurse her baby. My daughter was completely shocked and could not sleep that night because she had been so embarrassed in front of her friends.Annie responds: We can only imagine your daughter’s mortification to have her friends see the relatives au natural. They showed poor judgment and lack of consideration for others. And, at a public lake, they could have been arrested for indecent exposure. After giving this bad advice, Annie does suggest giving these relatives another chance. First of all, nobody is going to arrest these children for indecent exposure. It's a ridiculous suggestion. Secondly, the nursing mother had every right to take off her top to feed her child. Period. End of story. My response would have been: Dear Angry, my advice is to calm down. First of all, the laws protect nursing mothers, so this woman did nothing wrong. No woman should be ashamed to feed her child. I suggest that you do a Google search for breastfeeding and take this opportunity to talk to your daughter and explain to her that what this woman did was perfectly natural and healthy, and extremely beneficial to her baby.Tags: nudism, naturism, nudist, nudists, naturist, naturists, nudity, nudes, bare, au naturel, nude, naked |

09/01/2008 Cedar Trails in Ohio ![]() This is the third in a series of observational reports on nudist venues. The first report was on Paradise Gardens in Ohio, and the second on Green Valley in Ohio. Cedar Trails Nudist Retreat is located on 60 beautiful acres in Peebles, Ohio. The club is not clothing-optional, so nudity is expected, but consideration is given for first-timers who need to get adjusted. Cedar Trails is also family-friendly, with affiliations including AANR and INF. First of all, owners Jo Anne and Dave enticed us to come visit based upon their prompt and friendly emails. I don't know why, but both landed and non-landed nudist clubs seem to be very deficient in communications, so CT's quick responses were very welcome. Cedar Trails is protected by a privacy fence and an electronic gate, so be sure to call first before paying a visit. When we parked the car, Jo Anne came over to greet us, checked us in, handed us some basic literature and map of the grounds, and then gave us a quick finger-pointing tour (over there is the bathhouse, over there is the pool, over there is the hiking trail, etc.). This was a refreshing contrast with Green Valley, where we were carted around for a half hour before being allowed to roam at will. We returned to the car to disrobe, put on our sneakers, and set out to explore the grounds. The night before was their annual Labor Day Hog Roast, so most folks were just waking up, or puttering around their campsites. Just about everyone waved or said hello as we passed by. The grounds are very pretty at Cedar Trails, and the photos on their web site do not do it justice. Naturally, cedars are everywhere. We passed the office, the open cafe, the pool, the volleyball court, the hot tub area (with outdoor showers and bathroom), the bathhouse (with indoor showers), the fishing pond, the "saloon" which has a pool table, the badminton court, the children's playground, and the campsites. Everything was clean and well maintained. We thought that we would begin the day with a hike, so we headed to the trails. Jo Anne assured us that the trails were wide and clear, and well marked, and she was 100% correct. These are by far the best trails I have seen at a nudist resort, about 5 miles total. Apparently a newer member took up the task of improving old trails, and creating new ones, and he's done a great job. The trails wind upward through dense woodland up to a wide meadow which is used for the club's horses, surrounded by an electric fence. The area around the fence was all cleared for easy hiking around. In addition, there is a trail which runs through the woods around the meadow, and provides a lovely vista over what is known as the meteor crater. The valley below also is home to the historic Serpent Mound. To be able to hike nude through the woods and meadows for an hour is perfection for naturists. I can't say enough about the quality of the trails and the beauty of the landscape at Cedar Trails. After about an hour of hiking we arrived back at the main area, having worked up quite an appetite. We brought our own lunch, but the CT Cafe does provide food and beverage service. Best to call ahead to find out what's available on any given day. Two things stood out immediately at Cedar Trails. One, the club is very laid back, and while they have a list of rules, they don't shove them down your throat. Two, the people are very friendly, and a couple even came up to us while we were eating to introduce themselves and wish us a nice visit. We were made to feel welcome instead of being scrutinized. We basically spent the rest of the day within the fenced-in pool area. It was a gorgeous day without a cloud in the sky, so we wanted to take full advantage of the sun. The heated pool is 20' x 40', and 5' at the deepest point, so it's designed more for socializing than for swimming. Lots of good conversation and fun. Perhaps it was because of the previous night's hog roast, but there was not a lot of physical activity on this particular Sunday afternoon. Aside from continuous use of the cornhole setup, people seemed to be perfectly content to work on their tans and relax. Later in the afternoon the music was turned on at the pool, and eventually the super-soakers came out for a friendly water fight. Since we had a 2 hour ride back to Columbus, we packed up at about 5 PM to head home, saying goodbye to some of the new friends we made. I highly recommend Cedar Trails if you are looking for a clean and friendly nudist resort. We can't wait to go back. 09/01/2008 She's Not Laughing Anymore... ...but she is smiling a lot. Three years ago when I "came out" as a nudist, my wife's first reaction was to laugh. Some of that first giggling could be attributed to nervousness about the sudden change. Eventually the laughter died down. Thankfully my wife knows me well, so she accepted the fact that I don't really wear clothes anymore, realizing that I am still the same person. It was also not a problem with her for me to attend some nude swims on my own. She even shared knowledge of my nudism with our daughter, who is supportive. Eventually my wife decided to go with me to a nudist resort. The situation was made a little easier because we went with another couple that was also having a first time experience for the woman. We all had a great time. A week ago we had plans to repeat the experience at a different resort, but the plans fell through. But my wife kept asking when we were going again, so yesterday we packed up the car and went to Cedar Trails near Cincinnati. Today she has sore legs from hiking, a sore arm from playing cornhole, and an outbreak of freckles all over. But she is smiling a lot. 09/01/2008 A Nation of Slobs University of Notre Dame associate professor Linda Przybyszewski wants people to dress better. Przybyszewski doesn't think dressing up means dressing slutty, which she says too many women do today. She attributes that trend to the "red carpet'' effect, where movie stars before the Oscars try to attract photographers' attention by wearing strapless, revealing gowns that are inappropriate for most occasions ("I was rather appalled to see an off-the-shoulder communion dress in a suburban Chicago church this summer'').Somebody please tell Linda that if the younger generation is rejecting the false facade of chic clothing, that reflects well upon their ant-materialistic attitudes. And get her to a nudist resort. She'll have to deal with more than just naked toes. Tags: nudism, naturism, nudist, nudists, naturist, naturists, nudity, nudes, bare, au naturel, nude, naked |

09/01/2008 The History of Clothing Ian Gilligan believes that clothing is man's most important invention. “I’m no nudist,” Gilligan confesses. “I think that with most people it’s good that they wear clothing, and some people should probably wear more – if only for aesthetic reasons. I’m not being judgemental about clothing. At the physiological level, wearing clothes routinely from birth will have profound sensory consequences. Our skin is what fundamentally connects us to the physical world and makes us aware of our bodily existence, and clothing disrupts those connections. Looking at a lot of trends in basic human behaviour, we have become increasingly distanced from our natural surroundings. Instead we become more attached to the material substitutes we create and this began, in my view, when our ancestors became accustomed to being fully clothed. Yet the strange thing is that virtually all of this is now almost totally unconnected to our clothing.”Gilligan attributes the invention of clothing as the reason homo sapiens survived on the planet, but it's clear that clothing is no longer necessary for everyday survival in most circumstances, so textiles now serve as merely aesthetic coverings. Gilligan notes that humans have been wearing clothing so long that it has become second nature, something we all do without question because it's part of what we perceive to be normal behavior. The constant feel of clothing against skin connects us more to the material world instead of nature, in effect making us less human than we can be. I personally believe that nudism, in part, is in our DNA, that we are naturally wired to be without clothing. While the mind has been conditioned over thousands of years that clothing is required, some little spark still exists which rejects this. The problem is that modern society is so restrictive, it actually mandated the wearing of textiles in virtually all public situations, even when swimming and sunbathing. We've hidden our bodies for so long that the general perception is that nudity is somehow harmful, both to ourselves and to others. Most people never get the chance to be nude in nature, and that is a tragedy. Getting outside without the restrictions of clothing to hike, swim, sunbathe or play games with others not only liberates from our social conditioning, it reconnects us with our natural selves. 09/01/2008 Investigating Nudism The Reading Eagle has a seemingly positive article on PSHS (Penn Sylvan Health Society), but take note that the reporter called local police for a comment, and even posted another story "Is nudism legal?" where the Berks County Children & Youth Services and District Attorney's office were used as sources. At least they did contact The Naturist Society as a source, too, and published yet another article "About nudism in Berks" which references AANR, TNS, and PSHS. This speaks to the suspicions still harbored by the general public that nudism is somehow illegal or dangerous, and another sign that if authorities cannot prevent adults from participating, they will look for ways to keep children from the lifestyle. 08/30/2008 The Naked and the Nude ![]() A new exhibition explores the differences between the words "naked" and "nude" when it comes to describing art. (Sir Kenneth) Clark's answer was that nakedness "implies some of the embarrassment which most of us feel in that position", while nudity shows "the body re-formed". The writer and critic John Berger saw things the other way around. "To be naked is to be oneself," he said. "To be nude is to be seen naked by others."When I think of the word "naked", it implies vulnerability, to be without covering. You are naked in the shower, when you are born, when you visit the doctor, when you are in the locker room at the gym. When I think of the word "nude", it suggests a purpose beyond mundane nakedness, such as to be a nude art model, or a nudist, or to pose in Playboy magazine. Is being seen a requirement for nudity, as Berger suggests? If you are clothes-free on a remote beach all by yourself, are you naked, or are you nude? If you spend the day alone in your home without any clothing, are you naked, or are you nude? I think both Clark and Berger are partially correct. One can be naked without embarrassment, such as when in the bath, and one can be nude without being seen. It's the old adage reapplied: if a tree falls in the forest and nobody is around, does it make a sound? Of course it does. The absence of a witness does not mean that nothing happened. When it comes to nudism, the word "naked" does not seem to apply at all. The nudity is purposeful, it's social, and it's generally mandated. Now, discuss amongst yourselves. Is the woman in the painting above nude, naked, or neither? Tags: nudism, naturism, nudist, nudists, naturist, naturists, nudity, nudes, bare, au naturel, nude, naked |

08/30/2008 Can You Dig It? ![]() Some people in Boston, including the Mayor, are "outraged" at the cover of the free Weekly Dig magazine. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino was not impressed. "It's totally irresponsible to have a photo like this in a paper that's widely distributed around our city," Menino said. "Young children can see it. It's not what we should be showing our young people."Photo? PHOTO? If the mayor thinks that this cover is photo-realistic, I'd hate to see the world through his eyes. And what could possibly be dangerous to "young people" about this cover? The Weekly Dig's creative director, Tak Toyoshima, stands by the team's decision to use the picture as the magazine's cover. "The point of the cover is to celebrate summer, the end of summer," Toyoshima said. "It's the last hurrah, get all your ya yas out and just have fun." Toyoshima says they weren't trying to offend anyone. He said they have all kinds of cover pictures and consider it art. "Something like this is not to be sexual at all," he said. "They're nude, but there's nothing sexual happening."But the Mayor Menino is not deterred, and is looking for ways to censor the magazine by removing dispensers from city buildings, citing the cover as evidence of the "deterioration of society". I agree. Prudish attitudes like that held by the Mayor are clearly a step backwards for free thinking, rational people. 08/30/2008 Being Seen Back in the 70s, I would go out to clubs with a friend. He and I would joke that we were going out "to be seen". We used the same line when we went to the mall. "Let's go to White Flint to be seen". In t-shirts and jeans, nobody ever noticed us. Toby Hatchett has a column today that explores our penchant for seeing, and being seen. Her fascination with a smelly and ragged bicycle man, as well as with a 60-ish woman wearing a white and gold bikini and high-heeled sandals, makes for interesting reading. I found myself wondering why I looked so keenly at her mostly naked body. Why did I look so hard at biker man in his mostly naked body?To a certain extent, everyone is an exhibitionist, and a voyeur. Hatchett admits that she loves to look at interesting people who "go wild and shock" her, and she herself has pink hair, for no other reason perhaps than to simply be seen. So it's significant when the only time she is "invisible" is on a nude beach in Germany. It's precisely the lack of clothing which makes everyone blend together. As the tag line of this blog states: nude, we resemble one another. When Hatchett encounters her bicycle man and bikini lady, she spends a lot of time looking at them. Perhaps she didn't stare, but her eyes were drawn to these people. In a nude social situation, everyone looks, but nobody stares. In fact, people make a conscious effort to look each other in the eye. Everyone seems to have a cloak of invisibility. If Toby Hatchett walked into a nudist resort, I guarantee you that the only significant physical attribute that would be remembered by people who saw her would be her pink hair. Being seen requires drawing attention to yourself. Being nude draws attention to who you really are.
